The Autumn Welfare party was held in Cheshire on September
29th and was a
wonderful afternoon out. The Mitchells had the family rallied,
giving us all a warm
welcome and they erected an enormous gazebo for the heaving
table of refreshments most of which had been provided by the
guests. (We all want to know who made the fabulous shortbread
that simply melted in the mouth if it was you, please hold
your hand up high and promise to make some more, or better
still send us the recipe so that we can publish it in the
next edition of the "Friends" of Pug Welfare newsletter).
A marquee contained the merchandise, tombola and raffle. Such
insurance against wet weather naturally provided us with a
glorious afternoon; very warm, but not hot, enabling the pugs
to rush about freely, splash in the paddling pool and make
new friends- Guests arrived from as far apart as Kent and
Scotland; some bed and breakfast'd, some came with caravans
and camper vans, but everyone set out to have a good time.
The games were organised at the last minute by Sophie Mount
who stepped into Mr. & Mrs. Feltham's shoes after they
had car problems. Musical statues followed pug croquet, when
the Pug had to stand still- A large group of children with
Pugs on their laps played pass the parcel and then energetic
youngsters and adults played musical chairs, again with a
compulsory Pug on the lap. The last game was a relay involving
picking up cocktail sausages on a spoon, running with a foam
ball on a plate and gathering up biscuits in a cup. What good
sports all the participants were. While this was going on,
there was a major distraction of two Harley Davidson motorbikes,
complete with Ronnie and Reggie, the Pugs, who have their
own leathers and their owners Al and Julie Hale and 7 years
old Ruth.
Many of you will have stitched Elizabeth Bradley tapestries,
so we were lucky to have the lady herself present and willing
to judge the fancy dress competition. Her choice fell on Bill
and Ben the Flowerpot Men, closely followed by the Countryside
Alliance, St. Trinians and Mummy's Little Devil. They all
looked wonderful, as did all the other competitors!
The day came to an end with the Welfare Parade.
15 Pugs took part, all with their own story . Sometimes, their
owners have died or become ill and are no longer able to care
for them, sadly some have been neglected, even abandoned or
no longer wanted and passed on to not the kindest of homes.
Whatever
the circumstances are, you can be sure that if there is a
Pug in need. Welfare will
come to its aid; we have only to be contacted for the wheels
to be set in motion
The cards and Pug merchandise sold well (it is
often possible to get special presents ordered from Sylvia
Smith if you give her plenty of advance warning) the raffle
sold out, as did the name the Pug competition (it was Reuben)
and Sue Garrard did well with the silent auction and the tombola.
A special thank you to those who donated items for the bidding
auction, which we had not expected to have. The Trustees are
very grateful to everyone who helped with the stands, it really
is true that many hands make light work it is not just the
selling, but also the packing up at the end of the day after
an early start. Their efforts have been rewarded in the day's
takings and a profit of about £1,300 will help towards
the massive vet's bills which go with so many of our rescued
pugs.
As you probably know, we hold our summer event
in July at Crowhurst, Surrey- Next year's date is Sunday July
13th. Don't miss out on all the fun, games and
opportunities to meet other Pugs and their owners, make it
a family day out and a day to remember. BE THERE '!!
Alison Mount.
