An unfortunte young pug who came to the attention of Welfare and Rescue. One of our sad cases, we were unable to save the sight of this young pug

Theodore Cooper

For the first week or so we thought he - and we! - would never sleep, as he tried to tear down the door of whatever room he was in, but now he sleeps peacefully in his basket beside our resident 10 and a half year old black pug, Merlin. Of course his very favourite place to sleep is our bed, where he likes to lie on his back with his feet in the air, snoring loudly while one of us rubs his tummy. He's got a great sense of humour, loves to play, an orange which fell out of the fridge one day gave him huge amusement as he batted and growled it round the house.  And he's a music lover - sits under the piano in rapt devotion while Paul plays.

One of my greatest initial concerns was for Merlin, our much loved 10 and a half year old who'd had us all to himself all his life, is devoted to me and follows me everywhere, and it seemed unfair to suddenly introduce an intruder. For the first week or so Merlin did look sad and as though he was saying 'when's that interloper going home?' Now he's accepted Theo's part of the Cooper household - Merlin's problem is that he knows not that he's either a dog or even a pug so no wonder he was confused for a bit by Theo, who's definitely both! And either from tact or inclination, Theo has attached himself to Paul as firmly as Merlin's always been attached to me - so we now have his and hers pugs following us about.

We've been delighted and impressed with the work of the PDWRA. They've kept in touch to make sure that we and Theo are both coping all right, have given assurances that we can give him back at any time if we can't cope - an unthinkable suggestion - and obviously do a great job for these really special dogs. When I rang my contact the other day her brood had grown from seven to NINE.. I do think 9 might strain us, but we're just loving having two.
