ALFIE

When I was born several months ago I was a very fit and happy little puppy enjoying being looked after by my Mum and my caring breeder. A lady visited us and said I was lovely and that she wanted to buy me for her very own. I went home with her and thoroughly enjoyed all the attention.

One day I went to something called a dog show, I thought it was really silly and could not understand what all the fuss was about when I won (whatever that means) a red rosette. I decided that I would not co-operate, walking up and down like a silly billy. Someone else who was kind asked if 1 could go home with them. I enjoyed living with them and had two other Pugs to play with. Then one day I was feeling ill and sat down in a corner and refused to eat My slave had me back and forth to someone called a vet who took pictures of all my organs and pricked me to get some blood, I was really fed up and refused to be friends with anyone.

I became more and more poorly and my slave sat up with me but he was very worried and did not know how to sort me out. It was then decided to take me to a Welfare lady who took me to the Welfare vet who decided that I was very poorly and should see a specialist

The specialist also thought I was very poorly and if I did not have an operation I would die. He called me little fellow and I was just thinking that I rather liked him and then he stuck another needle in me, these vets they are all alike. And then what do you think, the Welfare woman left me there Must admit it was not at all bad in the hospital, everyone made a fuss of me and then one day they put me to sleep and did something called major surgery because I had a thing called Liver Shunt

I spent another three weeks there and then that welfare woman appeared again. There was a long discussion with a man in a white coat about nursing care, special diets and more blood tests, I think that means more needles, ugh. The man in the white coat asked if he could take me to his home to monitor my progress and if all went well he and his wife who is a very experienced veterinary nurse who trains other students would like to adopt me. There was some frantic telephoning and then I was allowed to stay. I loved all my other owners who loved me to bits and never stopped worrying about me but this lot are special and do you know, I am now eating properly and go on lots of outings. I am a model for student nurses, go to training classes, can you believe it. I have two very special friends who are ten and twelve years old who think I am the bees knees and when I go to meet them from school all their friends make a fuss of me. Some think I am handsome and others think I am ugly, they don’t know quality when they see it. I am going on holiday to the Lake District soon, my master loves climbing and I have promised that one day when I am fully fit I will go up Mount Snowdon with him if he promises to put me in his rucksack when I get tired.

Oh, I nearly forgot, I have a lovely elderly friend who keeps an eye on me. I sleep with her, she is so nice and warm to snuggle up to and when I am good she washes my face and cleans my ears. My master says I have given her a new lease of life whatever that means.

Wuff, wuff from Alfie.
