Ben's Story

Ben is an eight year old dark fawn Pug dog with a black mask. He has only one eye and the remaining one is severely ulcerated as a result of dry eye problems, making him almost blind. He is not one of the most beautiful creatures on God's earth but what he lacks in looks, he more than makes up for in character. I came across Ben on the 16th May this year when accompanying an RSPCA Inspector investigating a complaint about a German Shepherd called Kujo, tied to a stake in a garden and in very poor condition. When we arrived we saw both Kujo and Ben chained to separate stakes. Kujo had a small kennel of sorts, but Ben had only a broken down greenhouse for shelter. Both dogs smelt awful and there was dried faeces in a semi-circle at the limit of their chains, so it was clear they had been there for a considerable period of time. Kujo was in a very bad way.

is back legs had become paralysed and he was forced to drag himself around by his forelegs, which was made worse by the weight of the industrial weight chain that hung from his collar. The chain became entangled in his back legs in the short time we were there so one can only imagine the pain he would have been in with no one bothering to untangle him. The owners said that an appointment had been made to take Kujo to a vet on the following day to our visit, but changed their story when challenged, saying that they planned to.

Kujo had to be put to sleep as soon as we could get him to a vet, but poor old Ben, who was in a pretty poor state himself, was not sufficiently bad to warrant his removal from the property.
